It is now 9:47pm the night before it's due. Your child is at their desk in a state of controlled panic, typing furiously, insisting they work better under pressure. You are standing in the doorway trying to decide whether to help, argue, or simply go to bed and stop caring about something they clearly don't care about themselves.

Except they do care. That's the part that makes this so maddening. They care when the grade comes back lower than it should have been. They care when the teacher writes "clearly capable of more than this." They care, in that moment, and then the next assignment comes in and the exact same thing happens again.

This is not a story about a lazy teenager. It is not a story about bad habits or poor character or a generation raised on instant gratification. It is a story about time blindness — one of the most consistent and least understood features of executive function deficits in adolescents.

A project due in six weeks requires the student to begin work in week one, sustain it across weeks two through five, and complete it in week six. Every step of this requires prospective planning — the ability to hold a future commitment in mind across time and act on it before urgency appears. Why "Just Start Earlier" Doesn't Work

"Just start earlier" is motivational advice. It assumes the reason the student starts late is that they have decided — consciously or unconsciously — that starting late is acceptable. It assumes that if you can change the decision, you can change the behaviour.

And then time passes in the way it always passes for them — in an undifferentiated blur of now — and suddenly it's the night before again, and they meant to start earlier but somehow didn't, and they don't entirely understand why.

This is not lying. This is not manipulation. This is the gap between intention and execution that time blindness produces — a gap that feels incomprehensible from the outside and equally incomprehensible from the inside.

The same applies to deadline reminders. Telling a student with time blindness that their essay is due in two weeks, one week, three days — these reminders don't create the neurological urgency that would produce action. Time blindness manifests differently depending on the age and academic stage of the student — but the underlying pattern is consistent across every year group.

In Year 7 and 8 (ages 11–13): The last-minute pattern is present but manageable. Homework submitted at the deadline rather than in advance. Projects started later than they should be. Parents doing more scaffolding than they realise — reminding, prompting, sometimes helping more directly than is ideal. The intelligence of the student and the relative manageability of the workload means the pattern doesn't yet produce serious consequences.

In Year 9 and 10 (ages 13–15): The workload increases. The IB Diploma's Internal Assessment structure requires students to independently manage multi-week projects across six subjects simultaneously. The skill to teach is backwards planning: starting from the final deadline and working backwards to identify every intermediate step, with a specific date attached to each one. Not "finish the essay by Friday" — but "finish the introduction by Monday, complete three body paragraphs by Wednesday, write the conclusion by Thursday, proofread Friday morning."

Each intermediate deadline is small enough to be actionable and close enough to feel real. The student is never more than a few days from the next checkpoint — which means urgency is never more than a few days away.

3. Implement the Weekly Planning Reset

A fixed 20-minute slot every Sunday evening dedicated to mapping the coming week — every deadline, every task that needs to happen, every commitment — creates a predictable weekly anchor that interrupts the undifferentiated blur of time that time blindness produces.

The reset doesn't solve time blindness. It creates a weekly moment of temporal clarity that gives the student a map of the immediate future — close enough to feel real, specific enough to act on. 4. Use Body Doubling for Work Sessions

Body doubling — working in the physical or virtual presence of another person — is one of the most effective interventions for students who struggle with self-initiated work. The presence of another person activates the social engagement system and provides an ambient accountability that time blindness alone cannot generate.

This doesn't mean supervising homework. It means being present — in the same room, doing your own work — while your child does theirs. The accountability is implicit. 5. Break the Task Before Starting

The way to replicate this effect without urgency is task decomposition — breaking every task into its smallest possible first action before anything else happens.

Not "write the essay" — but "open the document, write the title, write one sentence." Not "revise for the chemistry test" — but "open the chemistry folder, find the Chapter 4 notes, read the first page." 6. Create Artificial Early Deadlines

Shame doesn't motivate change. What's the difference between this and just being disorganised?

Time blindness and disorganisation frequently co-occur because they share underlying executive function drivers. But they are distinct. Disorganisation is primarily about space and materials — the bag, the bedroom, the lost worksheets.
